Gun Control - Why Not?
As per what is apparently a script, another mass shooting leads to more calls for more gun control
In this post I'm going to look at gun control and homicide pragmatically; in other words I'm going to make my case based on the facts as I see them. In a second post I'll look at this same issue from a more historical and philosophical perspective.
The Uvalde elementary school shooting on Tuesday, May 24th, is the latest of these mass shootings; the tragedy is beyond words, and saddens us all. What the parents, families and friends of the victims are experiencing is unimaginable. Not to mention the police, who were ordered not to go in. Horrifying doesn't begin to describe it I'm sure.
Unfortunately, and again as if scripted, there isn't even time to bury the dead, much less mourn, before the political animals start feeding. As Rahm Emanuel famously said, "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before." The "things you think you could not do before" include, and are largely limited to, additional gun controls; in this case, it took just 15 days for the House to pass new gun controls on Wednesday, June 8th. Supposedly the House law is dead on arrival in the Senate, but regardless, gun rights are being eroded inexorably.
