Newsletter #284 2024 Nov 17 Monday
The opening of gun season for White Tails on the 15th delayed the Newsletter; it proved to be worth it.
Primal Woods
Justin took his deer from the stand we call Overwatch; it’s 24 feet up a tree, hence the name. An 85 yard shot from a seated shooting position, maybe an inch high at the entry wound, but on a downward trajectory, and a little behind the shoulder just as the text book calls for. Very nice shot, which followed a necessary period of patience waiting for the shot to develop, all the while the adrenaline and sugar are flowing into the bloodstream in twin rivers; that’s what they call “buck fever.” A nice shot indeed. That’s a breech-loading single-shot .350 Legend in case anyone is wondering.
Pure Maple Syrup
We staved off taste-testing the new Jalepeno Infused Pure Maple Syrup; Geri wanted to give the flavors a bit more time to meld. I was chomping at the bit, but she’d have none of it.
Homestead Rebel Farm
We’ve had family and friends since the day after I delivered the November pigs to the butcher, and this year I told myself to confine my work to the necessary animal care chores only. I pretty much held to that.
A second 9 point buck was taken on the property this week.
Justin’s was a morning hunt, this was an evening hunt. The deer were eerily similar. This was taken with a 12 ga. shotgun and a Remington 3” Magnum “Slugger.” The slug pancaked perfectly and did not leave the body; my nephew Andy found it just under the hide on the side opposite the entry wound.
Today I started the world’s best dog treats in the Excalibur Dehydrator.
Much as I dislike the taste of liver to be honest, it is the most nutritious part of most any animal.
The dogs just love these treats, and Tilly tried to snatch a slice of liver before I had even closed up the dehydrator; she got a nice slap on the butt for her trouble.
Justin did help me with the January pigs; we moved the better equipment from the November pigs area up to the High Tunnel. Two sets of hands makes getting the job done three times faster.
Toby’s recovery is ongoing; he’s on pain/anti-inflammatory meds for another 10 days or so. Pretty much back to his normal self, but way behind Tilly on the growth curve, and on the training curve.
Farmhouse
This was the only picture I had of our guests this weekend.
Geri took care of us at every meal, allowing us to focus on the hunt.
News
As you might imagine, I’ve also not been paying much attention to the news. The attention I have paid is to Trump’s appointees, a couple of which I wrote about last week. Of course the Leftists will run down every appointment; they’re all bad for this reason or that, very bad, which is to be expected. But, I will confine my comments to just two of the several appointees named so far:
Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security, aka State Security (the higher powers could not care less about the security of the citizenry, unless and until it threatens their own security), and,
Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence; the 17 intelligence agencies (spies all), including the FBI. And yes, they’re in your shit, all of them, and all of it. That’s their job as they’ve defined it. Domestic terrorism and all that hogwash. Come to think of it, they might not be in yours, but they’re definitely in mine!
Back to the point. It seems like those two positions would be, or should be, pretty much joined at the hip. And two strong, powerful, outspoken women, which of course we’ve all been told the misogynist that is Trump (according to the Leftists) doesn’t want to have around him. In that context they seem like curious choices.
Anyway, again, the Leftists have painted themselves into a corner. They are projecting their own faults individually and collectively onto Trump, and have been for over a decade now, which is why they know so much about the subjects, and, no matter how solid their case against either of these two appointees, they will be hard pressed to challenge either of them seriously, for fear of having their own misogyny exposed. Hating women has to be a Trump thing; none of that can be allowed to rub off on the anit-democratic Democratic Party leadership!
So. We’ll see, but not until next year. Until then there will be plenty of mud slinging to keep us entertained.
Books and Such
I’m still making progress through Boone. Other than that I’ve not been reading much either these last two weeks.
Christian recommended we watch “Finestkind,” which we did. I found it to be a good movie, and enjoyable. Ben Foster and Tommy Lee Jones star, among others.
All the best, and may God bless you and yours,
John & Geri
