Newsletter #302 2025 Mar 31 Monday
A busy week; two milling jobs completed, one planned; Tart Cherry Pure Maple Syrup in the bottle; "cleanup" largely completed and dump-trip scheduled. And more chicks!
Primal Woods
Allium tricoccum (commonly known as ramp, ramps, ramson, wild leek, wood leek, or wild garlic) is a bulbous perennial flowering plant in the amaryllis family Amaryllidaceae. It is a North American species of wild onion or garlic found in eastern North America. […] An edible plant, Allium tricoccum is used in a variety of North American and indigenous cuisines, and has also been used by Native Americans in traditional medicine. A French rendering (chicagou) of a Native American name for this plant is the namesake of the American city of Chicago.
So there you have it; Chicago was named for a wild onion.
Pure Maple Syrup
Geri and I have organized some taste-testing, so the Tart Cherry Pure Maple Syrup will not be on the shelves just yet; I have not even tested it. But, I’m confident it will be a winner. There are 1-1/4 lbs of dried tart cherries in the 12 bottles.
I am not exactly sure when I am going to get to the de-tapping of the trees, but I may start tomorrow morning; I am expecting visitors in the afternoon.
Sawmill Services
Starting with the pictures of Joel’s logs that I included last week…

We ended up with a nice load of 5/4 and 10/4 lumber.

It was a long, wet day at the mill, but I think we all enjoyed ourselves. Joel’s parents were kind enough to feed us lunch midday.

Using the chainsaw mill, I also completed the work for Lazaro. In the right-hand picture you can see that three stems grew together to form the single base of this trunk; it will look very, very beautiful when Lazaro completes his work.
Homestead Rebel
We brought in another dozen Golden Laced Wyandotte chicks this week; with egg prices at $8/doz nationally it makes more sense now than ever before. Below is a short video on the subject:
Speaking of chickens, and pigs; it’s time to get your orders in for broiler chickens and pigs. I plan to have the chicks and feeder pigs in house within the next two weeks; that would put broiler chicken availability at June 15 and pig availability at Sep 30, more a less. Here are some recent reviews:
If you want to see more review, click on this link.
April looks good if you are interested, in May and June the weekends are filling up, and it gets even better (tighter) in July and August. The property is also being advertised as a hunting property in October and beyond. We hope to see you soon!
News and Notes
The New York Times “bombshell” that hit this week, should be anything but “news” to anyone who is paying attention. Some new revelations perhaps, but no surprises.
I am working, still, on the next post in the Resist Evil series, and hope to have it out this week. The quote below should get your blood warmed up for the long-form post on the subject.
Books & Such
I am making slow progress in The COINTELPRO Papers: Documents from the FBI’s Secret Wars Against Dissent in the United States. Here is just a glimpse:
The inescapable message of much of the material we have covered is that the FBI jeopardizes the whole system of freedom of expression which is the cornerstone of an open society…At worst it raises the specter of a police state…in essences the FBI conceives of itself as an instrument to prevent radical social change in America…the Bureau’s view of its function leads it beyond data collection and into political warfare. <emphasis added>
Thomas I. Emerson, Yale Law Professor, 1971
Most of us have been able to see, if not recognize as such, the FBI waging political war in recent years. Nothing is new under the sun.
Don’t go! We cannot do it without you! Help us to keep the wheels on this effort, by visiting the website, and buying some of our Pure Maple Syrup!
OR! If you find value in our work, please do consider supporting Homestead Rebel for $5/month subscription.
OR! I can understand not wanting to sign up for a subscription…I get it, but if you would still like to support our efforts…
All the best, and may God bless you and yours,
John & Geri
