Is the Modern State of Israel the Biblical Nation of Israel?
I have been interested in an answer to this question for some time, with respect to what some see as unquestioned support for the state of Israel.
I am not going to write much here, I am simply asking the question. And, I will give you my current “position.”
My Current Position: the State is Not the Nation
I think the state of Israel, its government in particular, is not the Biblical nation of Israel per se, and does not necessarily represent the nation of Israel.
To put that in context, I would also argue the state that is the United States federal government is no longer a state for the People, even if it is of and by some of the People. You might say, or argue, that it never was of, by and for the People, and that those were simply aspirational words. Now truth be told, I consider myself to be an enemy of what the state has become.
I could still be swayed from my position regarding the state of Israel, but it might take some doing.
So What?
Well, I think the answer to this question then influences what we do, especially as Christians, or advocate for having done in our interest. For example, recently the U.S. government has taken action regarding a purported rise in antisemitism; or is it in fact opposition to the state of Israel, and not necessarily Jew-hatred? Either way though, such speech should be, from my point of view, protected by the First Amendment. But should it be protected speech?
Of course we can also go on to discuss the actions of the Israeli state in Gaza (subsequent to the October 7th attack of course), its preemptive attack on Iran, etc. It seems to me that what I advocate for in these situations is heavily dependent on the question I asked at the outset; Is the State of Israel the Biblical Nation of Israel? Or is “Israel” simply another secular nation-state, like any other?
Now What?
Now I wait for you to better inform my position, or to sway me from my position. I need help here; it is an important question.
Its a good question. To begin formulating an answer; ask another.
Why does the rest of the world hate Jews and genocide them?
Religious animosity based on zeal for your beliefs fuels the most inhumane, violent warfare of all. No religion is innocent; Judaism, Christianity, Muslim, Hindu, etc. All committed some of the most atrocious acts in the Name of thier diety.
Hate often knows no boundaries, nor follow logic. The ability to articulate WHY you hate often exposed the illogical fallacy of your hatred.
